The melting permafrostEven before researchers knew about the orange waters, they realized northern Alaska was rapidly changing. The Arctic Inventory and Monitoring Network mapped locations of orange streams, and aerial photos show how easy they are to spot because of their brightness. When scientists went to the orange streams to count fish, insects, algae, and other aquatic life , "biodiversity just crashed," biologist Mike Carey told Scientific American . Advertisement"The fish were totally gone," Koch told BI. The streams Koch monitors near the Brooks Range are fairly remote, but the rivers they feed into provide fish for human communities in this region.

(Reuters) - Russia fired cruise missiles at mock targets in the seas separating it from Alaska on Monday in what it said was an exercise to protect its northern shipping route in the Arctic. The defence ministry said Vulcan, Granit and Onyx cruise missiles were fired over distances of hundreds of kilometres to strike targets simulating enemy ships in the Bering Sea. The drills took place on Russia's Chukotka peninsula and in the Chukchi and Bering Seas, and were supervised by Admiral Nikolai Yevmenov, commander-in-chief of the Russian navy. Moscow said last year it planned to spend almost $30 billion by 2035 on developing the northern sea route, which has become more viable as climate change has reduced sea ice in the Arctic. It runs across the top of Russia from Murmansk near the borders with Norway and Finland to the Bering Strait near Alaska.

Polar bears live in 19 populations across the Arctic and are found in Canada, the United States, Russia, Greenland and Norway, according to conservation organization Polar Bears International. They found that the number of days polar bears were forced to go without food increased as greenhouse gas emissions accumulated. That allowed them to calculate the impact of cumulative emissions on the rate of polar bear survival. This would be about 60-plus gigatons over the 30-plus year life span of a polar bear in the southern Beaufort Sea. “They found that when we emit more carbon dioxide, it directly affects how many polar bear cubs can survive.

US Coast Guard icebreaker Healy made a rare trip to the North Pole at the end of September. Healy is one of only two icebreakers operated by the Coast Guard, and both of them are aging. Kenneth Boda, said in a release, calling it a "rare opportunity" and "a highlight of our Coast Guard careers." "This includes expanding the US Coast Guard icebreaker fleet to support persistent presence in the US Arctic and additional presence as needed in the European Arctic," the document adds. (The icebreaker Polar Sea, built alongside Polar Star, has been nonoperational since 2010 and is used for spare parts.)

The London Natural History Museum announced the 2022 winners of its Wildlife Photographer of the Year contest. The winning photos include a frenzied ball of bees, a dancing sea star, and the brushy mouth of a whale. The cactus bees, like most other bees, are endangered by habitat loss, pesticides, and the changing climate. The resulting photo, above, won the Grand Title in this year's Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition, which is developed and produced by the Natural History Museum in London each year. As clouds of sea-star sperm and eggs filled the water, photographer Tony Wu captured this otherwordly invertebrate in the throes of its dance.
